We’ve just about dried out after the Goodwood Revival, where Max  and our guest driver Charlie March contested the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy. Ever wondered what it’s like to experience the world’s greatest historic motorsport meeting from ‘beyond the fence’? The fabulous 1961 Jaguar E-type 3.8 Roadster Flat Floor we raced might well just be your front-row ticket for next year’s Revival…

‘Give me Goodwood on a summer’s day and you can forget the rest of the world.’ There was an amusing irony to Roy Salvadori’s famous quote last weekend after what was undoubtedly the wettest Goodwood Revival we’ve ever encountered. Not that spirits were dampened in the slightest. Wet or dry, the Revival remains the greatest celebration of historic motorsport on the planet – a kaleidoscopic cocktail of vintage style, drama, aviation and good old-fashioned fun.

As fantastic an event it is to spectate, the Revival takes on an elevated sense of specialness when you’re actually taking part and in the mix out on that hallowed asphalt. We enjoyed a truly unforgettable weekend racing this 1961 Jaguar E-type Series 1 3.8 Litre Roadster Flat Floor in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy – the most valuable and, arguably, beautiful race of the weekend. The best bit? We’re currently offering the car for sale. So if you’d like to realise your Goodwood dream and experience this magical event from ‘beyond the fence’ this time next year, here is your opportunity.

Among historic motorsport’s most successful pre-1963 E-types, chassis number 876176 is no stranger to the Goodwood Motor Circuit, having successfully competed in this very race (formerly the Kinrara Trophy) at the Revival on several occasions before. A very early ‘Flat Floor’ example delivered new to the United States, the car was fastidiously restored by DK Engineering to ‘Project ZP’ specification. The brief? Build a competitive and versatile historic competition car that could contest – and win – on both the racetrack and on road rallies such as the Tour Auto.

Max was privileged to share the driving (or should we say sailing?) duties with the Duke of Richmond’s son Charlie March. Charlie’s blistering pace was perhaps unsurprising given he grew up turning laps of this circuit and knows the place more intimately than most. Fastidiously prepared by Pursuit Racing, the E-type performed faultlessly and was, by all accounts, a wonderfully balanced and confidence-inspiring car to drive. Even in the frankly biblical conditions.

The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy more than fulfilled its billing as Saturday’s headlining race. Held in conditions mercifully much drier than Friday’s qualifying session, the 45-minute race was fast and furious, studded by a safety car just before the pit window that resulted in what can only be described as chaos during the driver changes. Sharing a track with Formula 1 legends, Le Mans winners and touring car champions, Max and Charlie nailed the brief, which was to stay out of trouble, bring the car home in one piece and at least try to savour the exhilarating experience.

“Sliding that magnificent E-type around Goodwood, headlights ablaze and in the thick of a battle with an Aston Martin DB4GT and a gaggle of other E-types, was something I won’t forget in a hurry,” recalls Max. “Exhilarating isn’t the word: I had a front-row ticket to one of the greatest shows on earth – it’s something everyone should experience at least once in their lives!”
