‘Limits are not an obstacle – they are a starting point.’ Cheesy marketing spiel, maybe. But Ducati really did tear up the rulebook when it set about creating its special-edition Superleggera series of superbikes back in 2014. The recipe was simple: take its already potent flagship model – in the first instance its 1199 R Panigale – and improve its performance by obsessively shedding all unnecessary weight. The execution? More difficult. It’s not like Ducatis made for good paperweights before the Superleggera.
If it wanted to subject the Panigale to a crash diet, Ducati needed to innovate. Magnesium-alloy was the answer, a newfangled lightweight compound metal that, until that point, had never been utilised in a production bike. Decorative tinsel wasn’t enough – Ducati employed magnesium-alloy for the major components including the monocoque frame, the swingarm and the wheels. For good measure, carbon-fibre and titanium were sprinkled liberally through the rest of the bike.
Inevitably, Ducati didn’t leave the Superquadro engine in the proverbial corner. The V-twin received titanium exhaust valves, a ‘super-lightened’ (Ducati’s words, not ours) crankshaft balanced with tungsten, and motorsport-spec two-ring pistons. The latter were another production-bike first and considerably helped the 1199 Superleggera reach its 200HP power output. Coupled with the scarcely believable 155kg dry weight, that meant, in car speak, 1,290bhp per tonne. As would become a recurring theme for Ducati’s ‘halo’ Superleggera series, it boasted the highest power-to-weight ratio of any production superbike ever built.
Excluding prototypes, just 500 numbered 1199 Superleggeras left Ducati’s factory in Bologna and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they sold out immediately. The 1299 Superleggera followed in 2016 and the V4 Superleggera in 2020, both introducing production-bike world firsts and both also strictly limited to 500 numbered pieces. They, too, sold out straight away. The 1299 was the first to employ carbon-fibre for all its load-bearing structural components, which made it 40 percent lighter than its ‘standard’ aluminium Panigale equivalent. At 215HP, its Superquadro engine was the final and most powerful production V-twin ever built by Ducati, too.
As its name suggests, the V4 Superleggera employed a monstrous new four-cylinder engine producing 224HP, which once again earned the lightweight 159kg superbike a World-Record power-to-weight ratio (over 1,400HP per tonne, in case you’re wondering). For the very first time, a bike manufacturer installed MotoGP-derived carbon-fibre aerodynamic wings onto the nose and the haunches. With no sporting regulations to adhere to, Ducati could push the performance envelope even further. In fact, the V4 Superleggera actually produced more downforce than Ducati’s MotoGP Desmosedici of 2020.
Collectively, this trio of Ducatis represent the very furthest edges of the motorcycle performance envelope. Three featherlight superbikes, each with mind-boggling motorsport-derived technology the like of which had not been seen before at production level, were built with a singular goal in mind: establishing new benchmarks in performance. Think of it a bit like Ferrari’s zero-compromise XX versions of its most potent models, the FXX, 599 XX and FXX K. They’re balls-to-the-walls supercars devoid of anything unnecessary to going round a track as quickly as possible. Except unlike those cars, and almost unbelievably, these bikes have number plates and wing mirrors.

For good measure, Ducati cemented their collectors’ status by limiting each Superleggera to 500 units. Well… sort of. Those in the know speak of the mythical ‘XXX’ bikes — unnumbered pre-production machines built in tiny quantities for press duties, motor-show appearances and factory presentations. Exactly how many exist, and how they escaped Ducati’s custody, remains unclear. Naturally, that only makes them even cooler.
Remarkably, these three Ducati Superleggeras – 1199, 1299 and V4 – are all ‘XXX’ bikes. They were acquired by a single owner, who has diligently kept them in ‘as-new’ condition. Both the 1199 and the V4 show zero kilometres on their digital readouts (complete with factory protective plastic film), while the 1299 has covered just 16 kilometres. All three bikes retain their complete sets of factory accessories and their ‘race kits’, which eliminate the mirrors and registration plate and introduce straight-through Akrapovič exhaust systems. Even the factory paddock stands feel special — a fitting detail for motorcycles of this calibre. Garage, office, lounge, kitchen, hallway – there isn’t really a place where these two-wheeled sculptures wouldn’t look perfect.
So, there you have it… three shades of Superleggera. Three exclusive Ducati ‘XXX’ superbikes, all in as-new condition and complete with all their factory paraphernalia.
