The most successful multi-disciplined motorsport enterprise, Prodrive is a name woven into the very fabric of the sport. Since 1984, the Oxfordshire-based outfit has won six World Rally Championships, eight top-flight world sports-car titles, six 24 Hours of Le Mans victories and four British Touring Car Championships. Among others!
Beyond the raw statistics, Prodrive is a name intrinsically linked with some of the greatest motorsport moments in recent history, not least when the late, great Colin McRae and Richard Burns became Great Britain’s only World Rally Champions in 1995 and 2001, respectively. The cars they were driving? Prodrive-built Subaru Imprezas, of course.
After dominating the 1995, 1996 and 1997 World Rally Championship, Subaru created the 22B, a limited-production road-going Impreza STi directly inspired by its dominant rally cars. Twenty-five years after the introduction of the fabled Impreza WRC97, Prodrive and Peter Stevens – the very names who developed, built and campaigned Subaru’s title-winning rally cars – went one step further with P25, a modern and more exclusive interpretation of the 22B. Lighter, more powerful and even better handling, the Prodrive P25 is, quite simply, the best road-going Subaru Impreza ever built.
P25 has been based on the lightweight bodyshell and underpinnings of the Subaru Impreza WRX Sti and comprehensively reengineered to cutting-edge motorsport standards by Prodrive’s world-renowned engineers & technicians to deliver searing real-world performance, akin to Subaru’s World Rally Cars. Think carbon-fibre bodywork, a bespoke Prodrive-built 2.5-litre four-pot producing 450bhp, a six-speed paddle-operated sequential gearbox and an adjustable active centre diff. Oh, and anti-lag.
While the design of P25 follows the fundamental principles of Peter Stevens’ original and widely adored Impreza WRC97, Stevens himself has returned to Prodrive to ensure that the modern aesthetic is aligned with the heart & spirit of the original cars.
A homage to the world’s original affordable sports car and the heroic drivers who wrote them into motorsport folklore, the Prodrive P25 is not only a weapon to raise the hairs and electrify the nerves on every drive, but also a collectors’ piece of the future, much like the 22B which precedes it. As the name implies, just 25 highly personalised examples will leave Prodrive’s global HQ over a two-year period.
A delivery-mileage left-hand-drive Prodrive P25, serial number 06 is finished in the stunning paint-to-sample Ferrari shade of Verde Francesca with contrasting gold wheels.
Inside, there are the optional Sparco SPX trimmed bucket seats complete with four-point Schroth harnesses, the body-coloured rear roll cage and the internal Racelogic HD video camera with lap-time telemetry capability. There is contrasting white stitching throughout the black and grey leather and Alcantara interior. Other optional extras include the tarmac-specification carbon-fibre splitter, the boot-mounted spare wheel and jack, and the bespoke P25 car cover. Following its Prodrive sign-off shakedown at Milbrook, this P25 was delivered to us here at Belchers Farm and has not been driven since.
“Prodrive has worked wonders to ensure you don’t have to be a WRC champion to get the best from the P25,” concluded the veteran automotive journalist Richard Meaden in his Evo road test of the P25. “Crucially just as much effort was put into making sure you feel like a WRC champion whenever you drop into its driver’s seat.” Serial number 06 is factory-fresh and patiently waiting to help you unleash your inner Colin McRae. If in doubt…
