Most automotive manufacturers could only dream of having a back catalogue like Ferrari’s. Which is probably why the Prancing Horse thought it a good idea to introduce a range of limited-edition ‘special-series’ models directly inspired by its most legendary models of yesteryear. The first in the so-named Icona line-up was this, the roofless windowless Monza, which came in SP1 and SP2 variants (simply one- or two-seat configuration).

In our eyes, it’s by far the most aesthetically pleasing Ferrari design of the last decade – respectfully nodding to a number of great 1940s and 1950s models while simultaneously holding its own as a clear special-edition model devoid of the cues of its ‘standard’ production counterparts. There’s something wonderfully hedonistic about the single-seater SP1, too. Throw in the ballistic V12 from the 812 Superfast, kicking out a dizzying 800bhp, and you’ve got a driving experience to rival the dramatics of the styling.

“In our eyes, it’s by far the most aesthetically pleasing Ferrari design of the last decade – respectfully nodding to a number of great 1950s models while simultaneously holding its own as a clear special-edition model.”

Ferrari was only ever going to make 499 of Monzas, instantly cementing its status as a certified modern classic and a darling of the new-generation collector.

One of only a handful of Monza SP2s specified via Ferrari’s Tailor Made arm, chassis number 63192 is a unique example directly inspired by a particular Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa from 1958: chassis number 0742 TR. Said Testa Rossa was delivered new to Finland finished in dark blue with a white racing livery and a red leather interior.

A modern day ode to chassis number 0742 TR, this Monza SP2 boasts a similar though altogether more modern specification: Blu Swaters paintwork, constrasting Bianco Avus livery and roundels and an interior trimmed with ‘aged’ Bordeaux leather. The car’s silver wheels and matching silver brake calipers help to keep the overall aesthetic on the elegant and understated side (if you could ever describe a windscreen-less 800bhp V12 Ferrari as ‘understated’).

There were very few optional extras that weren’t chosen by this Ferrari’s original owner. Allow us to highlight those which piqued our interest. The enlarged airbrushed Scuderia shields on the wings are a novel nod to Ferrari’s past, while the raft of glossy carbon-fibre bits and pieces – from the splitter and the diffuser to the wheelarches and even the front luggage compartment – very much root this SP2 in the present day. For the sake of practicality and actually getting out and using this car, the hydraulic nose lift, front and rear parking sensors and Apple Carplay are welcome inclusions.

Having resided solely with its original owner and covered a mere 2,800km, chassis number 63192’s condition is as good as the day it left the factory in 2021. With its unique and frankly exhaustive specification, rubber stamped by its Tailor Made plaque alluding to the specific Testa Rossa this car was inspired by, this SP2 ticks every box for the discerning new-generation collector of today. A limited-edition highly-personalised 12-cylinder ‘special-series’ Ferrari, it’s an incredibly special car, which honours the marque’s Barchettas of old with a respectful, stylish and modern twist.
