Nine-hundred and forty-four foot-pounds. That’s the gut-punching amount of torque produced by the 875bhp Porsche 918 Spyder, over half of which is on tap and available from just 800rpm. That’s right: 800rpm.

Don’t let the soft and sultry bodywork fool you into thinking the 918 Spyder is something of a pussycat. Porsche’s hybrid hypercar, the Stuttgart marque’s answer to the LaFerrari and the McLaren P1, tells a story of almighty power and freakish versatility. Beneath the surface this was a drastically different beast to its lesser production Porsche counterparts.

In fact, much of its mechanical blueprint including the high-revving 600bhp V8 engine and the trick aluminium double wishbone suspension was derived from the Le Mans-winning RS Spyder prototype. Perhaps it’s of little surprise then that the 918 Spyder became the first production car to break the seven-minute barrier at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The specific time was six minutes and 57 seconds, a staggering 14 seconds clear of the previous record.

We were able to recently rehome this stunning Porsche 918 Spyder for a longstanding client. The original owner was clearly a collector of discerning taste. The Rhodium Silver Metallic paintwork and Black leather upholstery was contrasted by Acid Green accents and piping – a nod to the car’s eco-friendly credentials.

An exercise in understated restraint, optional extras ringed on the Porsche order form included a smattering of carbon-fibre interior trim, a steering wheel and seat inserts trimmed with Alcantara, a front-end lifting system and the uprated Burmester surround-sound audio system. We’re unsure if the latter will get much use given the proximity of those two flame-snarling roof-exit exhausts to the open cabin. Three words: unadulterated aural pleasure.
