Climbing into the ring with the likes of Ferrari and Porsche is no mean feat. And especially so for a comparatively young manufacturer with only two existing models. Needless to say, McLaren more than rose to the challenge with the P1, its drop-dead-gorgeous 903bhp hybrid hypercar. Its answer to the LaFerrari and the 918 Spyder.

Here was an ultra-sleek, thoroughly modern and exquisitely packaged coupé crammed with Formula 1-derived technology. A carbon-fibre monocoque. A 727bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 coupled with a 176bhp electric motor. A drag-reduction system that increased aerodynamic efficiency by 23 percent and allowed the car to reach 186mph in a mind-scrambling 16.5sec. A steering-wheel mounted push-to-pass button that temporarily deployed maximum power (916bhp) from the high-density batteries. And all of that in a car with a light and airy cabin, excellent visibility, air-conditioning, a brilliant stereo and even a whisper-quiet electric-only driving mode. The P1’s breadth of ability is simply uncanny.

“Here was an ultra-sleek, thoroughly modern and exquisitely packaged coupé crammed with Formula 1-derived technology.”

In short, the P1 firmly (re)established McLaren as a contemporary supercar powerhouse. And a manufacturer that’s gone from strength to strength with its subsequent line of models – all of which take direct inspiration from the mighty P1.

Number 363 of the 375 cars built by McLaren, the P1 we’re offering was delivered to its first – and only - owner on 29 July 2015. It was road-registered in the United Kingdom with the number it retains to this day. It’s finished in the ‘McLaren Exterior Elite’ shade of Ice Silver, a stunning, understated hue which turns almost turquoise in direct sunlight. Complementing the exterior is a cabin trimmed with Carbon Black leather and Alcantara.

Factory optional extras included the Stealth Pack, which comprised the carbon-fibre McLaren nose badge, satin-black wheels, black exhaust pipe and black heat shield. Other boxes ticked on the order sheet included the tyre-pressure monitoring system, Meridian Surround Sound system, front and rear parking sensors, fire extinguisher and polished ceramic brake calipers.

Exposed carbon-fibre is also a prominent theme throughout the specification of this car. The side panels, snorkel, rear clam inserts, front and rear bumpers, rear wing and exit ducts are all exposed polished carbon-fibre, providing a contrasting top-and-bottom duality to the P1’s design, as originally intended by its lead designer Paul Howse.

Bespoke McLaren Special Operations features inside include the Carbon Black Alcantara door inserts, Carbon Black leather and Alcantara steering wheel and contrasting Stone Grey stitching throughout.

In the nine years since it was delivered, this P1 has been driven fewer than 290 miles and undergone its scheduled one-, five- and seven-year services. Last month, the car had its battery health check completed at McLaren Dusseldorf, with its current state of health was recorded as 92 percent. Most recently, number 363 was sent to McLaren Petersfield in the United Kingdom, run by Dean Lanzante, for a comprehensive service.

As you would expect of a car that’s covered such scant mileage, this P1 is genuinely is in ‘as new’ condition, with visible no blemishes to be found outside or inside. The car is also accompanied by all its original factory paraphernalia, including its original service and warranty book, user manual, handbook,  spare key, car cover, warning triangle, first-aid kit and hybrid battery charger.
