Maserati, the MC12 GT1 and success
The
Maserati MC12 GT1 marked the return of one of Italy’s greatest brands to the
track and its ascendance to the top step of the podium. Its competition debut
came in the highly competitive 2004 FIA GT Championship with the factory-backed
AF Corse squad. A year later and the Maserati MC12 GT1 won the FIA GT
Manufacturers’ Cup, scoring almost double the championship points of the
nearest competitor! The MC12 GT1 was powered by a 6.0-litre, V12, naturally
aspirated engine, which, due to regulations, was fitted with a restrictor, resulting
in the car producing an impressive 580 bhp.
The MC12
GT1 was a dominant force, and over the next six seasons of racing, it claimed
six FIA Teams’ Championships, two FIA GT Constructors’ Championships, six
Drivers’ Championships and no less than 40 race victories!
Maserati
has not competed in FIA GT Championship racing since this era of absolute domination.
The Maserati MC12 Corsa
Designed for track use
by its most important clientele, the Maserati MC12 Corsa was a direct
development of the MC12 GT1. Void of restrictors, the race-derived 6.0-litre,
naturally aspirated, V12 engine produced an incredible 745 bhp at 8,000 rpm —
over 110 bhp more than the MC12 Stradale and 150 bhp more than the MC12 GT1
race car!
Visually, it is clear
to see the link to the MC12 GT1, with the Corsa retaining the shorter nose
section compared to the MC12 Stradale and a separate rear wing. The wing
mirrors and front cooling vents are also the same as the GT1 car, making this
the ultimate Maserati!
This Maserati MC12 Corsa
The
Maserati MC12 Corsa offered here, chassis 005, was the only car delivered in
silver, with a fabulous bordeaux Alcantara interior to complement. With its
dark grey wheels and exposed carbon-fibre rear wing and mounts, this MC12 Corsa
has a fabulously understated yet unmistakeable presence — it’s purposeful but
not flashy.
This is the
ultimate expression, built without restrictions or regulations, of what a
track-focussed Maserati should be. A 6.0-litre, naturally aspirated V12
producing 755 bhp with a six-speed sequential semi-automatic Cambiocorsa
gearbox and carbon-ceramic brakes ensure that each fortunate owner experiences
truly exhilarating performance. The carbon-fibre and Nomex honeycomb sandwich
monocoque is stress-bearing, with front and rear aluminium subframes and an
integral role cage, weighing in at an impressively light 1,150 kg.
Maserati
produced only 12 of these ultimate track weapons to rival Ferrari’s 30 FXXs. Those
12 clients were offered the car by invitation, at a cost of €1,000,000. For
your money, this MC12 Corsa could propel itself from 0 to 200 km/h (0–124 mph) in a mere 6.4 seconds and continue on
to a top speed of 326 km/h (202 mph)!
Never has there been a more powerful Maserati, and with this example finished in a unique colour combination and having covered a mere 400 kilometres from new, surely you want to experience the exhilaration that this car can offer?
