The sports car racing division of the Swiss “Care Group” was started 2000 in partnership with Prodrive, for the development of a racing version of the Ferrari 550 Maranello, to compete in the FIA GT and then ALMS GT1 Championships. The cars were fitted with the naturally aspirated 5.5L V12, which was mated to a sequential Xtrac gearbox.

In a racing history which almost paralleled the Audi R8, the Prodrive-built and developed cars humbled the Ferrari factory’s own version of much the same car (the 575 GT1) and went head to head with everything from the factory-run Chevrolet Corvettes through to the Maserati MC12s, and proved ultimately competitive, having clinched the 2005 LMES GT1 title – making three consecutive seasons of title winning form for the cars. The record includes five championship wins in total: LMES GT1 in both 2004 and ‘05, FIA GTs overall in 2003 and ‘04, and the Italian GT Championship in 2005 too.

Of the major world endurance races, the cars have triumphed in the Spa 24 Hours in 2004 and the ‘GT1’ win at both the Le Mans 24 Hours and Petit Le Mans in 2003.

Those race wins came in not just the LMES and FIA GT Championships, but also the ALMS and French, Italian and Spanish GT Championships.

In total, Prodrive constructed 12 cars with chassis number 108612, offered here, being the second car built in 2002, and fifth overall, but most importantly this is the first time one of these stunning cars has come to the market! The car made its competition debut at the Sebring 12 hours on 15th March and was driven by Anthony Davidson, Darren Turner and Kelvin Burt. It was a successful start and the car qualified 3rd in class on a packed grid, and during the race would set fastest GTS lap en route to claiming 2nd in class, 13th overall!

Later in the year chassis 108612 entered the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on the 18th October. Here the car was driven by Alain Menu, Peter Kox and Tomas Enge. The car started 3rd in class on the grid, and after 10 hours of competition crossed the line 5th overall, but most importantly as GTS class winner! To round out 2003, the car returned to Le Mans on 9th November for the 1000Kms where it qualified 1st and finished 2nd in class with Peter Kox and Tim Sugden.

For the 2004 season, Labre Competition entered the car for the full Le Mans Endurance Series, along with the FFSA French GT Championship, and of course the Le Mans 24 Hours. Over the season the car entered ten events, and destroyed the competition in the LMES with a 100%-win rate, resulting in the LMES GTS Championship! This car won the Monza 1000Kms, Nurburgring 1000Kms, Silverstone 1000Kms and Spa 1000Kms, in one season, along with a 5th place in class Le Mans 24 Hours finish, a remarkable achievement!

During 2005 the car would enter another fourteen events claiming two more race victories, and a 4th place class finish at its third Le Mans 24 Hours! The races were a mixture between the FIA GT Championship, and FFSA French GT Championship with seven podium finishes in total. Wins at both Le Mans and Magny-Cours helped the car secure second in the FFSA GTS Championship.

Another 14 races were added to the cars stunning race history in 2006 with another four podium finishes, and in 2007 a final 13 events before the cars final event in Argentina in November 2008. In conclusion, this car has competed in 71 events, claimed 20 podium finishes, 3 pole positions and won 7 races! Combined with a phenomenal 96% finishing rate and the 2004 LMES Championship, this 550 GT1s race history is unparalleled!
