The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona:
In the
late-1960’s, the ‘Daytona’, having earnt its unofficial title courtesy of the
Ferrari 1-2-3 domination at the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours, was the must-have grand
tourer. It featured a Columbo-designed 4.4 litre V12, quad-cam, dry sump, 6
Webber carburetted engine with over 350 bhp, mated to a smooth 5-speed manual
transmission, allowing the enthusiastic Ferrari owner to power from 0-60 mph is
an astonishing 5.4 seconds!
The Daytona
was not only admired by the automotive world, it also featured in the 1970’s
Miami Vice TV series, celebrities including Elton John owned examples, it was
the first Ferrari to really achieve cultural fame. But for us, our favourite
piece of history associated with the Ferrari Daytona is from November 1971 when
Brock Yates and Dan Gurney set a new record for cross-country vehicular travel
in the USA. The pair drove a blue 365 GTB/4 from New York City to Redondo Beach
in California in a record of 35 hours and 54 minutes, a colossal 53 minutes
faster than the second-place finisher!
The
ultimate variant of the Daytona are the early European-specification cars which
featured a plexi-glass cover over the headlights, later being replaced by the
pop-up units as a result of US legislation. As is common with the earliest
version of many cars from this era, they are considered the purest, with
development only leading to additional add-ons. The ‘Plexi’ cars also feature a
different interior to the later cars, with no headrests on the seats and a
beautiful wood-rimmed steering wheel which harks back to the elegant 275 GTB/4.
This Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’:
Assembled
at the Ferrari factory in July 1970, this Ferrari Daytona was delivered new to
first owner Mr G.E.Tuzzato in Johannesburg, finished in the beautiful Blu Sera
with Pelle Beige combination we see today. The car was registered in South
Africa with license plate ‘CNJ 505 T’ before being bought by its second owner,
Mr Marco Garbero, also a resident between South Africa and Turin, for 165,000
Rand. Two years later, in 1989, Mr Garbero exported the car to his native Italy
aboard the Andromeda Star.
Once in
Italy the car entered storage, seldom being driven, and today displaying only
51,000 kms, which is believed to be original. After being serviced by Official
Ferrari service centre, Forza Service in Turin, during 2003, 13689 was returned
to long-term storage at the same facility. Mileage was noted as 50,335 kms at
this time.
The car
then sat in storage, covering less than 700 kms in 15 years, until September
2017, at which time it was serviced by Official Ferrari dealer and Classiche
Centre, Rosso Corsa in Turin. Works included a full engine service, replacement
of the exhaust muffler/tail pipes, carburettor rebuild along with a new fuel
pump and tyres. It was at this time that we bought the car and commissioned a
cosmetic overhaul, whilst also beginning the application for Ferrari Classiche
Certification. It has been confirmed that this car retains its original
chassis, engine, transaxle and body.
We chose to
re-paint the car, with Daniele Turrisi of Bergamo, Italy, ensuring the finish
and colour of paint is entirely accurate. Turrisi is well-known in the classic
car world for his extremely high quality of workmanship and paint finish. At
the same time, we decided to retrim the leather interior, sourcing the material
from Henk Van Lith (HVL Leather) in The Netherlands, who is considered one of,
if not the leading leather supplier for classic Ferrari’s. This material was
sent to La Perfetta in Padova, Italy, who retrimmed the car, retaining the
original dashboard and carpets. Additionally, we chose to have the wheels
repainted and re-chrome the bumpers and wheel spinners and surrounds, really
enhancing the visual appearance of this stunning car. Most recently, in January
208, this car was delivered to Rosso Corsa in Milan for fitment of a new
clutch, ensuring peace of mind motoring for the next lucky owner.
The Ferrari
365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ is one of the greatest touring cars to leave the hallowed
gates within Maranello. The 4.4 litre, double overhead cam V12 Ferrari engine
has an abundance of torque, allowing driver and passenger to enjoy either a relaxing
journey along the French Riviera, or a blast through the Swiss Alps.
This
two-owner example, fresh from a full service, retaining all its major original
mechanical components is ready to hit the highway, will you be behind the
wheel?
