The most famous American muscle car of them all?

Chassis no. Z67400F4A01834

As Carroll Shelby applied the same recipe he’d perfected on the AC Ace (Cobra) to Ford’s immensely popular Mustang, so he created arguably the most famous American muscle car of them all. While the small-block V8-powered Shelby GT350 was the Mustang which proved very difficult to beat on the racetrack, it was the GT500 – with its more aggressive body and seven-litre big-block V8 – which every man and his dog wanted to own in the late-1960s. Especially those early examples built at Shelby American’s Los Angeles facility in 1967, before production moved to a plant in Iowa, Michigan.

Earlier this year, we were approached by a longstanding client who’d yearned to own a Shelby GT500 since he was an impressionable child. His criteria were clear. He wanted a Wimbledon White 1967 model with Acapulco Blue stripes and a four-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox. Perhaps more importantly, he wanted a restored car with a view to using and enjoying the car as much as possible. We were able to locate a fantastic car which ticked all the boxes in Canada, purchase it on our client’s behalf and transport it to the United Kingdom. Chassis number 01834 benefits from a comprehensive ‘rotisserie’ restoration carried out by the renowned marque specialists at Legendary Motor Company in Canada. It’s condition is beguiling and every bit as good as the day it left the factory.

Whether this Shelby’s new owner decides to exhibit the car on the concours lawn or simply use it to ferry his family around London on sunny summer days, we know it will be treasured and enjoyed for many years to come.
