The 400 Superamerica series of cars were the successors to the 410 Superamerica models, and were produced between 1959 and 1964. This was the first time with a production road car that Ferrari deviated from the path of the model type number denoting the swept volume of a single-cylinder. The ‘400’ designation referred to their total cubic capacity of four litres. The cars were split into two series, the first featuring a 2,420mm wheelbase (SWB) and the second measuring 2,600mm (LWB), with all but two of the forty six cars being designed by Pininfarina.
The engine, with factory type reference 163, had a compression ratio of 8.8:1, and was a departure from the ‘long’ block Lampredi-designed engines used in the preceding 410 series of cars. Instead they had a ‘short’ block motor, based on the original Colombo SOHC per bank design used in the concurrently produced 250 GT series. The displacement was enlarged by increasing the bore to 77mm and lengthening the stroke to 71mm, providing a total displacement of 3967cc.
The car offered here, chassis 3361 SA was one of the last short-wheelbase Coupe examples produced. Pininfarina records show that the chassis was delivered to their coachworks on 18th December 1961, and after nearly three months the finished car left on 10th March 1962 with Scocca number 99537. The car was finished in the same elegant colour combination it wears to this day, Blu Notte (Midnight Blue, Italver paint code 18943M) with natural Connolly leather interior (code 3309). The car features open headlights above a wide air intake with the iconic egg-crate grille and a pair of fog lights. The carburettor air intake, beautifully finished with a chrome surround dominates the bonnet, with eleven louvres punctuating the front wings.
In March 1962 the car was displayed at the 32nd Geneva Motor Show alongside the sensational Pininfarina design exercise ‘Superfast III’ (chassis 2207 SA) and a beautiful 400 Superamerica Cabriolet (chassis 3309 SA), also by Pininfarina. Chassis 3361 SA was bought new from the Geneva Motor Show stand by Mr Giuseppe Brainovich, a resident of Milano, who was an avid collector and loyal client of Ferrari. Over the next four years, the car would return to the factory’s Assistenza Clienti in Modena for regular servicing.
On the 6th November 1968 the car was registered in Italy to a Mr Dino Ferrari, a Lancia dealer based in Brescia, who bought the car on the 16th October 1968 at a bankruptcy auction in Zurich. At this point the car was registered with the license plate it still bears to this day. On 17th July 1969 3361 SA was bought by Mrs Ernesta Comendulli, at the age of only 25.
The next private owner of 3361 SA, Mr Salvatore Borrelli of Naples, took ownership on 1st January 1977. 3361 SA would make its next public appearance at the Ferrari Days Modena in September 1983, then again at the 80 Anni di Sport ACI con la Ferrari in Modena during September 1985. The car was then sold to its current owner in 1985! 3361 SA joined a fabulous collection of sports and racing cars, including significant Ferraris.
On 11th may 2004 chassis 3361 SA was presented to Ferrari Classiche were it was awarded its red book certification. Ferrari confirmed the car retains its original chassis, engine, gearbox and differential.
In June 1997 the current owner and 3361 SA attended the 50 Anni Ferrari Concours d’Elegance in Modena, as well as in June 2007 the 60 Anniversary. Then, most recently in June 2016 the car was presented at the Concours d’Elegance Pininfarina ad Alassio.
