This Alfa Romeo 1900C
SS Berlinetta by Zagato
The
beautiful Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Berlinetta by Zagato offered here complete
production on 11th June 1955, before being delivered to its first
owner in Milan in early August the same year. As confirmed by a Certificato Di
Origine issued by Alfa Romeo Classiche in December 2019, this 1900C SS was
originally finished in Rosso (red), just as it is offered here.
As with
many high-performance post-war sports cars, this Carrozzeria Zagato-bodied Alfa
Romeo quickly found its way to the United States of America and by 1961 was
owned by J.C. Edwards. By the 1980’s this 1900C Super Sprint had joined the
collection of world-renowned Alfa Romeo enthusiast, Said Marouf. Other cars
that formed part of Marouf’s esteemed collection included an Alfa Romeo Giulia
TZ1 and TZ2, but perhaps most famously also the 1953 Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 5.
As a result
of his incredible car collection, Said Marouf had a wealth of knowledge and
experience with Alfa Romeo’s, and only entrusted the very best to work on his
cars. Based in Berkley, California, Paolo and Nino Epifani were well-respected
restoration experts, having already won many major Concours events, and in the
late 1980’s were entrusted to full restore this 1900C SS Berlinetta. Upon
completion of this exacting restoration, Marouf entered this car in the world’s
most famous Concours, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 1990 where the
car was awarded 3rd in class.
In 2001,
having covered only 2,000 km post-restoration, this 1900C SS Zagato was bought
by Paul F.Schouwenburg in Holland who entered the car at many European events.
Class victories were awarded at the 2003 Palais Het Loo Concours, and
Schwetzingen European Concours before this 1900C SS Berlinetta by Zagato was
invited to the 2005 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
In 2006 the
car made another trip across the pond, joining the collection of John D’Alessandro
of Southampton, New York, USA. Within this ownership, the car regularly
travelled between Europe and the USA. During its time in Europe it was
maintained by Cedar Classics in Hampshire, England, and during its time in the
States, it was looked after by Northumberland Engineering in New York. In 2007
D’Alessandro entered this Alfa Romeo in the Mille Miglia Storia, wearing race
number 304. A year later, in May 2008, a FIVA Identity Card was awarded.
In August
2009, this 1900C SS Berlinetta passed to its most recent owner in America. In
2019, this collection was ranked as the 4th most relevant car
collection in the world! Sitting alongside this Alfa Romeo are cars including
the magnificent 1930 Mercedes Benz SS Erdmann & Rossi which won Best of
Show at the 2001 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB
Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’ by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, and a 1952 Ferrari 340
Mexico Berlinetta by Vignale.
Today, this
exciting collaboration between two of Italy’s automotive powerhouses is one of
the most collectable automotive icons. As one of only 39 examples built,
incorporating Carrozzeria Zagato’s iconic design and Alfa
Romeo’s competition pedigree, the 1900C SS Berlinetta by Zagato is a must-have
for every discerning collector.
