This Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Zagato
In 1955, at
the young age of only 25, racing driver Joakim Bonnier imported this 1900C SS
Zagato into Sweden, and it wasn’t long before he took it to the track, entering
the Alfa in the 1955 Swedish Grand Prix at Kristianstad, where it was
displaying temporary Swedish license ‘A 2770’. Bonnier was early in his
competition career, but his talent was evident, as he took victory at the grand
prix!
One week
later, on 14 August 1955, this car returned to the circuit, again with Bonnier
behind the wheel, but this time at Karlskoga. Wearing race number 31, Bonnier
took another class victory with this 1900C SS Zagato. Bonnier then sold the car
to a friend, Carl Lohmander, in Stockholm, Sweden, who entered a race at the
Roskilde Ring in Denmark, before inviting Bonnier to return back behind the
wheel of the Alfa at the 1955 International Trophy race, held at Oulton Park at
the end of August. This was Bonnier’s third race with this Zagato, and once
again, he took class victory, wearing race number 95.
After
Bonnier’s success, Lohmander competed with the car at several events, including
the Avusrennen in Berlin, before the car was featured in the December 1955
edition of Motor-Revy magazine. The
car has since remained in Sweden and Norway, continuing to compete at events,
whilst also being featured in other magazines. Most recently, the car joined
one of the foremost Alfa Romeo collections, where it has been maintained,
regardless of cost, and regularly displayed at some of the world’s leading
classic car events. The history file accompanying this car is fabulous,
containing many period images of Joakim Bonnier competing with the car,
including pictures of him receiving the winner’s trophy and garland at the 1955
Swedish Grand Prix!
As one of
Zagato’s most celebrated designs, this Alfa Romeo 1900C SS Zagato is even more
special thanks to its first owner, Formula One and sports car driver Joakim
Bonnier, taking victory in every event in which he drove it.
